Ontario Northland: Through timber to tidewater

Some Railway Age readers will be surprised to learn that GO Transit, launched in 1967, was not the first venture of the Province of Ontario into the railway business; that event actually occurred some 60 years earlier. The honor actually belongs to the provincially owned Ontario Northland Railway, which links the city of North Bay, on Lake Nipissing, to Moosonee, on the salt waters of James Bay.

Double-digit gains for intermodal, carloads

The Association of American Railroads reported U.S. rail traffic for the week ending Dec. 23 was 551,566 carloads and intermodal units, up 11% compared with the same week in 2016.

OK freight plan gets federal nod

Calling freight movement “vitally important” to Oklahoma’s and the nation’s economy, the Oklahoma Department of Transportation said it received federal approval for its five-year Freight Transportation Plan, to accommodate expected increases in the 800 million tons of freight valued at $1.3 billion that move through the state via rail, truck and waterway each year. The approved plan details freight trends and traffic forecasts to identify significant freight transportation projects needed in the state that will help develop partnerships and target economic growth across all modes of transportation. The state said about 58% of all freight in Oklahoma is transported by truck and 41% by rail.

Short line credit added to tax reform bill

President Trump isn’t expected to sign tax reform legislation into law until 2018, but the bill already will assure short line railroads of a happy New Year.

Schumer a thorn in Thune’s side—again

On. Dec. 21, U.S. Sen. John Thune (R-S.Dak.), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, took to the Senate floor to voice his support and call on his colleagues for unanimous consent to confirm the nomination of Ronald Batory as Federal Railroad Administrator. E. Hunter Harrison, 1944-2017

E. Hunter Harrison is gone. Railway Age’s twice-honored Railroader of the Year (2002 and 2015) died on Saturday, Dec. 16, in Wellington, Fla., from what CSX, the railroad that ultimately became the last stop in a long and distinguished career, attributed to “unexpectedly severe complications from a recent illness.” He was only 73.

NCDOT: $6M for short line projects

The North Carolina Department of Transportation handed out nearly $6 million in grants for 12 projects aimed at short line freight service and grade crossing safety.
