For KLW, Cummins, ‘The Next Step in Tier 4 Repowers’ (UPDATED)

KLW (Knoxville Locomotive Works, Inc.) and Cummins Inc. on March 6 announced completion of its first KLWX 4400 ACT4, a remanufactured line-haul locomotive equipped with an EPA Tier 4-certified, 4,400-hp Cummins QSK95 prime-mover. The prototype locomotive is currently operating on CN, where it is undergoing reliability and performance testing.

Brazilian mining company VALE S.A. has selected ENSCO Rail for track inspection systems and software. In addition, New York Air Brake (NYAB) has earned TTX Company’s SECO (Supplier Evaluation Committee) Award; and Wabtec Corp.’s locomotive plant in Marhowrah, Bihar has received an award for its learning and skill development program.

For NYAB, a Major Manufacturing Shift

New York Air Brake LLC (NYAB) on Sept. 29 announced what it is calling a “realignment strategy” for its North American manufacturing operations that involves launching production in Ciudad Acuña, Mexico; “shifting capacity and production scope” at three U.S. facilities—Salisbury, N.C.; and Nixa and Kansas City, Mo.—“completing a substantial manufacturing refocus” at its Watertown, N.Y., facility to a machining operation. The company broke the news to employees on Sept. 29.
