Tank car production bolsters railcar orders

Economic Planning Associates, in its most recent freight car building report, said it expects orders this year to dip to just above 50,000, down from 2012’s 58,900, then rebound strongly in 2014 and experience steady growth through 2018.

Freight car market 2013-14: Down, then up

Economic Planning Associates (EPA), in its latest freight car delivery forecast, is predicting that 48,800 cars will be delivered in 2013—a 15% drop from 2012’s 57,200—followed by a strong rebound in 2014, to 60,300.

Economic Planning Associates, noting that demand for certain freight car types has weakened, has released figures reducing its forecast for 2012 by approximately 3,000 units. EPA said deliveries will rebound beginning in 2014.
