Railway Age’s 2022 Short Line and Regional Railroads of the Year: VTR, SKOL

Railway Age is honoring the Vermont Railway (VTR) and the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad (SKOL) as its 2022 Short Line (Class III) and Regional (Class II) Railroads of the Year.

The Port of Corpus Christi (Tex.) is located on the western Gulf of Mexico with a 36-mile, soon-to-be-54-foot (MLLW) deep channel and a 63-mile short line.

Watco to Serve Port of Corpus Christi

Watco has signed a 10-year contract with the Port of Corpus Christi in Texas to become operator of the 63-mile short line servicing the port.

Transportation service and logistics company Watco is part of a joint venture adding a 400-car SIT yard to the Port 10 Logistics Center in Baytown, Tex.

Port 10 Watco Rail Logistics will start work next month on a new 400-car storage-in-transit (SIT) yard in Texas. Also, Pioneer Lines’ Napoleon, Defiance & Western Railway will serve a multi-million-dollar fertilizer plant, to be launched in Ohio in 2024.

Watco is partnering with India-based Medha to convert two switchers to battery power. In addition, mining company Fortescue Metals Group of western Australia has ordered two new EMD® Joule battery-electric locomotives from Progress Rail, a Caterpillar Company.

ASLRRA to STB: No Uniform Service-Metrics Reporting

The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) was among those responding to the Surface Transportation Board’s (STB) call for comments on issues regarding First-Mile/Last-Mile (FMLM) service; the deadline was Dec. 17.

“The adoption of RailPulse technology advances rail safety, enhances our customer service model and drives growth for the rail freight industry at large,” Greenbrier Executive Vice President, Chief Commercial and Leasing Officer Brian Comstock said.

Greenbrier Joins RailPulse Coalition

The Greenbrier Companies, Inc., has signed on with RailPulse, a coalition of railcar owners, builders and operators whose aim is to “aggregate North American railcar fleet data on a single platform” to increase safety and the visibility of customer goods.
