California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) on Aug. 29 resumed partial light rail service. In addition, the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) on Aug. 30 launched CharmFlex, a discounted three- and 10-day pass for flexible commuter travel.

Miami-Dade County (Fla.) Metrorail has put into service the last two Hitachi railcars from a 136-car order that was awarded in 2012. In addition, California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) may resume light rail service as early as this week, and Denver Regional Transportation District (RTD) is moving forward with a northwest commuter rail study.

VTA’s six-phase plan “outlines a complex set of requirements that must be met before trains are once again carrying passengers along the three light rail routes throughout Santa Clara County,” the California agency said.

VTA Service Restoration Date Extended

California’s Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has reported that restoration of light rail service will “likely start later than the end of July, as originally expected.”

“We know our light rail passengers are eager to see trains running again,” the VTA stated in a July 8 website post. “We are too.” The Santa Clara agency noted: “VTA’s collective priority is to put our people first while also achieving the goal of providing critical transit services to our community.”

Multi-Phase Plan Under Way to Restore VTA Service

Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has begun a five-phase plan to restore light rail service by the end of July, but “no firm date can be set at this time,” the California agency reported.

The Capital Line South LRT Extension will receive $268.71 million (C$333 million) in municipal funding for construction from Century Park to the Heritage Valley Park & Ride in Edmonton, Alberta.
