UTLX to Convert Sheldon Tank Car Plant to Repair Facility

Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) plans to convert its railroad tank car manufacturing plant in Sheldon, Tex., to a railcar repair facility. The company expects to cease manufacturing operations at the facility in August 2020 and establish repair operations over the coming year.

UTLX’s 5,000th compressed gas tank car

Union Tank Car Company has marked the fabrication and in-to-service completion of its 5,000th compressed gas tank car since 2010. These jumbo cars are optimized for transporting propane, butane, and other liquefied petroleum gasses, production and distribution of which is associated with the growth in North American natural gas supplies. “Rail’s role in the North American energy renaissance extends well beyond crude oil,” UTLX said.

UTLX “Tank Car of Tomorrow” nears testing milestone

Union Tank Car Company’s patent-pending, prototype “Tank Car of Tomorrow” TIH pressure tank car is nearing completion of its second year of accelerated field tests, “reliably equaling more than five years of normal service,” the company announced on June 3, 2014.
