Byford Returns to His London Roots

The New York Metroplitan Transportation Authority’s loss is Transport for London’s (TfL’s) gain. On May 27, London Mayor Sadiq Khan and the TfL Board named Byford as London’s Transport Commissioner.

Goodbye MetroCard, hello Oyster

It has been about 20 years since MTA New York City Transit phased out tokens for the now-iconic MetroCard farecard used on the system’s subways and buses. Now, the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be phasing in a new system similar to Transport for London’s Oyster open-payment, contactless-based fare collection system.

TfL extends fare collection contract with Cubic

Transport for London (TfL) has awarded Cubic Corp.’s UK subsidiary Cubic Transportation Systems Ltd. a contract worth more than $700 million (U.S.) for the Electra ticketing and fare collection system. The contract is a continuation of the partnership between TfL and Cubic, which has seen the introduction and network-wide rollout of the Oyster contactless smartcard.
