Leone to Serve as SLSI Manager, Research and Organizational Development

The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) has chosen Julia Leone, Ph.D., as Manager, Research and Organizational Development. Leone will work with senior leadership in an effort to establish and manage the priorities and goals for process improvements; building systems to monitor, evaluate and report on progress; and direct efforts to ensure quality and consistency through the application of systematic approaches in its programmatic design and execution. She will also lead SLSI’s research efforts.

Walsh to Serve as SLSI Director of HazMat Programs

The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) has hired John Walsh as Director of Hazardous Materials Programs. Walsh’s 30-year career includes experience in public safety, security, emergency management, homeland security and compliance, including 15 years in the freight rail industry.

Short Line Safety Institute Expands Training

The Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI), celebrating its 5th year of operation this year, was formed with a grant from the Federal Railroad Administration Office of Research, Development and Technology with the mission of enhancing the safety culture on short line and regional railroads. The American Short Line and Regional Railroad Association (ASLRRA) Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI) has named Sam Cotton as Senior Manager, Safety and Operations, replacing Mike Long, who recently accepted a position with the Federal Railroad Administration. Cotton will be responsible for management of SLSI’s Safety Culture Assessment program, a “voluntary, non-punitive and confidential five-to-ten-day onsite process with a rigorous methodology that includes an online survey of staff, discussions with management, and observations of a railroad’s daily practices.”
