Railcar Manufacturing Slips in 1Q2020

The Railway Supply Institute American Railway Car Institute (RSI-ARCI) 1Q2020 railcar industry order, delivery, and backlog statistics show that orders in the quarter moderated y/y to 6,172 cars vs. 9,663 in the prior-year quarter and down sequentially from 8,464 cars in 4Q19. The industry delivered 10,824 railcars in the quarter, 26.5% lower than the 14,727 railcars delivered in 4Q19. The backlog now stands at 46,330 railcars, down 9.7% from 4Q19’s 51,295 cars—the lowest backlog figure since 4Q10’s 22,658.

Railcar orders, backlog soar: KeyBanc

Freight car order, delivery and backlog statistics for 2Q18 show that orders increased sequentially to 23,788 cars from 10,348 in 1Q18, the largest quarterly figure since 4Q14. Carbuilders delivered 13,071 units in the quarter, nearly identical to 1Q18’s 13,098. The backlog stands at 65,161 railcars, up 18% from 1Q18’s 55,216 cars; this implies “a net cancellation of 772 railcars, consisting primarily of gondolas and medium-cube covered hoppers,” according to analysis conducted by KeyBanc Capital Markets.

The Railway Supply Institute American Railway Car Institute Committee published its railcar industry order, delivery and backlog statistics for 1Q17 on April 25. As of Dec. 31, 2014, the backlog stood at 142,837 units, compared to 81,927 units at the end of 2014’s first quarter.
