Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board (CTB) recently approved a Rail Industrial Access Grant for Norfolk Terminal LP, and adopted the framework to advance the state’s Transit Ridership Incentive Program (TRIP).
The St. Louis region relies heavily on its Norfolk Southern- and CSX-served rail connection with the Port of Virginia, hundreds of miles away on the East Coast, to maintain its position “as one of the premier multimodal freight hubs and distribution centers in the United States.” The relationship was discussed in detail during the FreightWeekSTL 2021 conference, hosted by Bi-State Development, which operates the St. Louis Regional Freightway.
The Virginia Port Authority has been awarded a $2.1 million grant from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to develop a proof of concept using an autonomous truck to access terminals and deliver and receive containers.
Expansion projects at the Port of Virginia to accommodate larger ships and increased container traffic are on schedule.
