Transit Tech Providers Sought for COVID-19, Environmental Sustainability Challenges

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and the Transit Innovation Partnership have launched “COVID-19 Recovery” and “Environmental Sustainability” challenges for early- to growth-stage technology companies; applications are due March 25 for a chance to pilot products at MTA, New Jersey Transit, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and New York City Department of Transportation.

Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART); consultancy HDR; New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA); transit system manager and operator RATP Dev USA and WSP USA have appointed new executives.

A proposed 14-mile “Interborough Express” transit service could use the existing Bay Ridge Branch freight line—owned by MTA Long Island Rail Road and operated by New York & Atlantic—and CSX’s Fremont Secondary line to link communities in Brooklyn and Queens that are not currently served by rail.

For NY Penn Station, a New Path Forward

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Nov. 3 unveiled a new plan for New York City’s Penn Station that will prioritize and expedite reconstruction of the existing station, 60% of whose users are MTA New York City Transit subway and Long Island Rail Road riders.

First Look: East Side Access Test Ride

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) officials on Oct. 31 marked an East Side Access project milestone: test riding a Long Island Railroad train into Grand Central Terminal.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority has deployed ShakeAlert, an early earthquake warning system, at all bus and rail division facilities.

Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) has installed earthquake early warning systems at 26 rail and bus division facilities. In addition, New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is forming a subsidiary to oversee the new East Side Access project terminal; South Florida Regional Transportation Authority’s (SFRTA) Tri-Rail is resuming full service; Thales has delivered interlocking systems for three Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) rapid transit stations; and Wabtec will provide doors, brakes, HVAC systems and event recorders for Metra’s new multilevels.

“I am excited to welcome such an experienced and committed group of public servants from diverse backgrounds to leadership roles across the MTA,” MTA Acting Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said during the agency’s reorganization announcement on Oct. 19.

People News: New York MTA, Patriot Rail

The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has reorganized its leadership team. In addition, Patriot Rail has appointed a General Manager for its Lakeshore Railcar & Tanker Services company.

MTA New York City Transit on Oct. 14 set a new pandemic-era record of 3,236,904 subway riders, surpassing by nearly 50,000 the previous high set on Oct. 7.

At New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority, subway ridership is steadily climbing post-pandemic and two former Gov. Andrew Cuomo appointees are being forced out. In addition, behavioral health providers will ride St. Louis (Mo.) Metro Transit vehicles as part of a one-year pilot project.
