Railserve and Focused Technology Solutions (FTS) have developed the solar-powered Derail Light, 150 of which Railserve will install this quarter to improve derail device visibility in rail yards.

Compatible with both sliding and hinge derails, the light identifies derail location and offers a patent-pending, cloud-based interface that allows for “automatic reporting to any smart device to detect the position of the derail and to help prevent accidents,” reported FTS and Railserve, Marmon/Berkshire Hathaway companies.

Railserve Regional Leader of Operations Jason Smith played a key role in the technology’s development, following a derailment investigation, according to the partner companies. “I thought, ‘I wish we could see the derails better at night and through the snow,’” said Smith, who is located in Alberta, Canada. “That’s when I asked myself, ‘Why couldn’t we just put a light on the derail for better visibility?’”

“We are continuously working to innovate and make our operations a safer place for both our employees and customers,” said Chris Hagge, President of On-Site Services at The Marmon Group. “We believe the Derail Light is a significant step in the right direction.”
