ISSS To Hold Virtual Event With Railway Age Contributors

Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor

The International System Safety Society (ISSS) on May 26 will present the first of a three-part virtual series, Safety Doesn’t Happen By Accident: The Case for System Safety in Industry 4.0. The series is based on a white paper republished as three consecutive articles in Railway Age.

The one-hour event features Sonia Bot, Chief Executive of The BOT Consulting Group Inc., and Tony Zenga, President of both the ISSS Canada Chapter and CMTIGroup Inc., who are the white paper authors.

Industry 4.0 (also known as the Fourth Industrial Revolution) is a reality, Bot and Zenga say. Many traditional industries such as rail, transportation, supply chains and energy are at the beginning of their journey to establishing true end-to-end digital continuity through the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT); Positive Train Control (PTC) and Enhanced Train Control (ETC); and AI (artificial intelligence)-based automation.

How do we know that these solutions and systems are safe and that there are no lurking issues? How do we know that the integration of multiple components from vendors, partners, and even from within meet safety objectives? How do we know if safety integrity is preserved after a change is made? How do we shift the paradigm where safety moves from a cost center to a value-added business driver?

In Part 1 of this virtual series, Bot and Zenga answer these questions—and make the case for system safety as the necessary discipline for industries to embed as they move forward in innovating and advancing in the 21st century.

ISSS’s May 26 virtual event will run from 12 p.m.-1 p.m. To learn more, visit the Railway Age Industry Events webpage.
