Transcaer® (Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response), a voluntary national outreach organization, on Thursday announced the recipients of its 2012 National Awards Recognition Program. Several railroads were among the award winners.

Among the 10 entities honored with Transcaer’s National Achievement Awards: BNSF Railway, CN Dangerous Goods Team, Canadian Pacific, CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Corp., and Union Pacific Railroad.

Two railroad representatives were honored individually with Transcaer’s Torch Award, recognizing individuals whose legacy leaves a lasting impact on the Transcaer program: Norfolk Southern’s William J. Oertly, and CN’s Art Vesterfelt.

“This year’s award recipients are certainly committed to their companies, but it’s their dedication to their communities that truly sets them apart,” said National TRANSCAER® Task Group Chair Ed Chapman, of BNSF Railway.

“In everything that these great men and women do, they are ensuring that the principles of TRANSCAER—including an unparalleled commitment to safety—enhance the knowledge of emergency responders across the country. And as volunteers who bring these essential programs and people together it’s important that we give them the recognition that they deserve. Because they make the difference, each and every day,” Chapman added.

The awards will be formally presented at two upcoming industry conferences.

Transcaer is sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, the Association of American Railroads, CHEMTREC®, The Chlorine Institute, The Fertilizer Institute, and the Renewable Fuels Association.
