Vertex Railcar Corp. is now officially certified to manufacture and supply tank cars to the North American market.

The company, based in Wilmington, N.C., received the Association of American Railroads’ M-1002 Initial Certification in early July.

The certification covers new, general service non-pressurized tank cars built to new U.S. Department of Transportation DOT117 specifications.

Vertex in June said it received an order from Trinity Chemical for as many as 350 coiled and insulated DOT117 tank cars for use in the crude oil/chemical markets. It was the second for Trinity following an order for 100 DOT117 ethanol cars.
