MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) is seeking expressions of interest by Nov. 30 for the supply of dual-mode (diesel/thirdrail) locomotives for use on the subway network.

The dual-mode locomotive would need to have a diesel engine, and be able to draw power from the third rail as well as cope with gaps between sections of third rail in excess of 49 feet without using the diesel engine. It must also be able to adapt to fluctuations in the power supply without affecting its performance.

The locomotive would need to be able to haul a maximum 375 tons. It should weigh 50 tons and be able to supply a continuous tractive effort of 28,000 foot-pounds, with a maximum operating speed of 25 mph.

The locomotive must meet EPA Tier 4 emissions standards as well as workforce noise regulations.
