MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) has awarded Stadler Rail a contract to supply 127 two-car rapid transit (metro) trainsets with options for up to 50 additional sets.

The contract with MARTA, which is worth more than $600 million, is Stadler’s first order for metro trains in the U.S. and the largest order by vehicle volume in the company’s history.

The 750V DC third-rail type CQ400 trains will be married pairs of two vehicles. Each 150-foot-long set will seat 128 passengers. The trainsets, which will be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), will feature passenger Wi-Fi, power outleys for electronic devices, LED lighting, and large luggage racks for services to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Assembly will take place at Stadler’s plant in Salt Lake City, Utah, with the first vehicles due to enter service in 2023. The deal includes two options, each for 25 additional trainsets.

MARTA launched tenders for the contract in August 2016.
