Joint venture group Skanska-Shimmick-Herzog was awarded a $772 million contract Thursday by the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) board of directors to extend BART 10 miles south, into Santa Clara County.

The project would extend BART service to San Jose’s Berryessa neighborhood, a precursor to additional extensions of six miles that would push BART service deeper into Santa Clara County.

The joint venture will oversee design and construction of the BART line, track, operating systems, and two elevated stations in Milpitas and Berryessa, Calif.

The joint venture’s bid was $77 million less than an earlier estimate and also provided an accelerated construction schedule, according to VTA Board Chairwoman Margaret Abe Koga.
