On the same day New York City dunned ride-hailing services to help pay for subway upgrades, the MTA New York City Transit announced plans to modernize its fleet of R142 cars.

The NYCT is seeking expressions of interest from firms experienced in upgrading/rebuilding trains, to equip 1,030 R142 cars with Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) equipment, to replace old and obsolete systems to improve reliability and make repairs and upgrades.

Built by Bombardier from 1999-2003, the R142 at the time was the largest car order in the history of the system.

The conversion plan includes systems upgrade and/or replacement such as doors; installation of wifi, and more. The winning bidder will provide all design, engineering, testing, manufacturing, delivery, warranty, training, spare parts, tools, diagnostics test equipment and other services, the agency said.
