MUNI eyes new E train route

San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency has approved a plan that will increase MUNI service by 12%, adjust numerous bus routes, and create a new E- Embarcadero streetcar line.

The E –Embarcadero, using heritage streetcar equipment (including but not limited to numerous President’s Conference Committee [PCC] cars), will run from Fourth and King streets to Fisherman’s Wharf. Weekend-only daytime service would start next year, with daily service targeted for sometime in 2016.

The new route combined segments of existing service offered by the F Line linking Fisherman’s Wharf and Embarcadero, and the N and T lines, which link Embarcadero with Fourth and King streets (serving AT&T Park and Caltrain’s northern terminus), usually covered by more modern light rail transit (LRT) gear.

Approval by SFMTA, affirmed Friday, March 28, 2014, “comes after an extensive outreach process and an informational hearing for the Board of Directors on March 14,” the agency said, noting many of the proposals “were revised based on public input. Some proposed route changes were removed from today’s plan either because additional outreach is needed or because the proposals are not going forward.
