Milwaukee will shortly become the next U.S. city to power up a streetcar system.

Construction has concluded on Milwaukee’s new streetcar route with operations scheduled to begin in the fall.

Under a $10 million sponsorship deal with a local casino, rides on The Hop will be free for the first year on the system’s initial downtown route. A second lakefront line is scheduled to begin operations in 2019.

Site preparation for The Hop began in 2015 and construction along West St. Paul Avenue commenced in early 2017.

The 2.5-mile route links the Milwaukee Intermodal Station with the city’s lower east side, near hotels, offices, housing, parking and major downtown attractions.

Two of a total five Liberty LRVs have been delivered by Brookville Equipment. Transdev will operate the system under a contract running through December 2023.
