The first eight pedestrian shelters for the Finch West light rail transit (LRT) have been installed at Driftwood Avenue, Metrolinx recently reported.

According to the agency, two additional canopies will be installed at Humber College Station later this month with 116 canopies in total along the Finch West line. These canopies, Metrolinx says, will “shelter commuters, provide nighttime lighting to increase safety and visibility, and include ticketing machines and route maps.”

Earlier this fall, Metrolinx crews installed the first two electrical cabinets at the Driftwood stop. Two electrical cabinets were also installed at Jane and Finch stop.

According to the agency, the cabinets perform the following three critical functions:

  • Powering the lights, PRESTO and pass machines, cameras and PA system.
  • Backing-up power in the event of a power outage.
  • System monitoring: equipment that monitors all the essential systems.

According to Metrolinx, once the Finch West LRT is complete, there will be 29 electrical cabinets at the 16 surface stops across the route.
