Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) early Monday morning heralded reaching 250 million customers since DART light rail transit service began almost 16 years ago on June 14, 1996.

Led by DART President/Executive Director Gary Thomas, and joined by American Public Transportation Association (APTA) President and CEO Michael Melaniphy, officials singled out Don Johnson, a 10-year user of DART LRT, at Union Station at about 5:49 a.m. (Central Time) Monday morning, awarding him a set of monthly passes, along with tickets to local attractions such as the Dallas Zoo, Children’s Aquarium at Fair Park, and the Museum of Nature & Science.

DART’s ceremony coincides with this year’s APTA Rail Conference, which commenced Sunday at the nearby Hyatt Regency, adjacent to Union Station. DART’s Thomas also is the current APTA chair.
