Miami airport breaks ground for people-mover
Written by Douglas John BowenMiami International Airport began construction Monday of its 1.27-mile, $342 million MIA Mover line. The dual elevated guideway project will include two station stops while connecting the airport with Miami Intermodal Connector, a passenger intermodal hub offering access to Amtrak, Tri-Rail, and Metrorail services, along with bus and taxi options.
A joint venture of Odebrecht and Parsons is overseeing construction. Miami-Dade Aviation Authority, which will operated the service, is anticipating operations to begin in 2011.
“We are proud to be given the task of building a project that will further improve Miami-Dade’s infrastructure, help boost the economy by creating jobs, support small businesses, and contribute to decongesting traffic at the airport–all of which contribute to a sustainable community,” said Gilberto Neves, Odebrecht’s U.S. chief executive, in a statement.
MIA Mover is projected to transport 48,000 daily visitors by 2020.
