China develops 500 km/h HSR train
Written by Douglas John BowenChina’s official news agency, Xinhua, announced that the Ministry of Railways over the past weekend launched a test train capable of achieving 500 km/h (310 mph) cruising speeds. CSR Corp. Ltd. built the train.
Xinhua quoted a high speed expert as saying the train “will provide usefulreference for high speed rail operations.” CSR Corp. Chairman Zhao Xiaogang told the Beijing Post it was not certain that future trains would travelat such high speeds. He said the goal is to “ensure the safety train operations.”
Fittingly for cutting-edge technology, the train has been designed to resemble an ancient Chinese sword.
Two high speed trains collided last July 23, killing at least 40 people; the cause is still under investigation. China subsequently cut back its high speed program substantially.
