Technical studies will soon be under way for new commuter rail service in the Monterrey area between the General Mariano Escobedo International Airport and García. The state of Nuevo León in northeastern Mexico has tapped SENER in Mexico, a subsidiary of SENER Engineering, to conduct fieldwork and preliminary project work.

The service will run along 62 kilometers (approximately 39 miles) of existing freight track and offer 27 stations through the cities of Apostaca, San Nicolás de los Garza, Monterrey, San Pedro Garza García, Santa Catarina and García.

The fieldwork portion of the SENER contract includes a geometric and topographic survey; a hydrological study; identification and evaluation of preparatory work; and geological and geotechnical studies of the main line and highway/rail grade crossings, as well as environmental feasibility study work. Preliminary project work includes a general project description and engineering for passenger and freight service.

Commuter trains are expected to operate at 40-50 kph (about 25-31 mph) and carry 170-200 riders per car. The service is slated to handle 250,000 riders per day.

In related news, SENER in Mexico handled a prefeasibility study and other work for the third line of Mexico’s Guadalajara light rail system, which opened for service Sept. 12.
