MARC Penn Line to add weekend service

Maryland Transit Administration's (MTA) MARC rail operations will add weekend service on its Penn Line, part of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor, beginning Dec. 7, 2013, MTA said Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The expansion is being funded from the rise in the state’s gas tax, signed by Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley last week. The gas tax rise also is funding other rail-related projects, including the planned Purple Line light rail transit project spanning two counties north of Washington, D.C.

MARC reportedly plans to add at least eight round trips Saturday between Penn Station-Baltimore and Washington Union Station, and six round trips on Sunday.

No weekend service is yet planned for MARC’s Camden Line, which operates largely over CSX right-of-way. But MARC does plan to add two weekday round trips on the Camden Line.
