VisioStack Receives SBIR Grants

The U.S. Department of Transportation, through the Federal Railroad Administration, has awarded Greenville, S.C.-based VisioStack, Inc. Phase I and II SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) grants for two projects tasked with improving traffic and pedestrian safety at highway-rail grade crossings. Both projects will help identify crossings that pose a risk to traffic and prioritize planned improvements.
The Phase I SBIR project involves creating an autonomous system that can assess key inventory at crossings using VisioStack’s RailLinks® FFV (forward-facing video). Project objectives include determining whether crossing gates are functional, and if key signage such as warning signs and stop signs are present.
The Phase II project involves VisioStack’s AXIS (Aerial Crossing Inspection System), described as “an innovative highway-rail grade crossing inspection system that uses UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) and machine learning to perform crossing inspections with unprecedented efficiency.” In receiving this contract, VisioStack became the first business in South Carolina history to be awarded a Phase II SBIR project from the U.S. DOT.
