Nexxiot has launched a cargo monitoring device to provide real-time shipment location, status and condition data via the cloud. Also, Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has exercised a contract option with Thales for eight additional computer-based interlocking systems.

Nexxiot Cargo Monitor

Nexxiot reported that its new Cargo Monitor can be attached to high-value and sensitive products, such as perishables, pharmaceuticals, textiles, conditions-sensitive industrial products, and electronics, allowing:
• cargo owners to receive information on location, conditions and handling events as well as “safety-related assurances.”
• shippers to prove the location, status and cargo quality, and to “demonstrate process accountability and transparency on delivery times to the receiver.”
• carriers to “improve safety performance and reduce issues resulting from mis-declaration of cargo.”

Additionally, the monitor’s data can be used “to accelerate essential processes including freight declarations, customs checks and stowage planning to reduce journey times,” according to the manufacturer.

The Nexxiot Cargo Monitor includes on-board power management and recharging, and can connect to Wireless Maritime Services (WMS).

“There are approximately 40 million standard intermodal shipping containers in use around the world today, most of which are not tracked in any way,” said Nexxiot Managing Director, Head of Cargo Matilda Bouchet, who noted that Nexxiot’s Cargo Monitor provides “end-to-end visibility and critical data in a rugged, cost-effective, and easy-to-deploy package.”

Thales is supplying new computer-based interlocking systems for eight additional STM rapid transit stations, bringing the total to 16. This will “complete the upgrades across all lines of the rapid transit system in Montreal,” according to the manufacturer, which was awarded the original contract in 2018.

“This contract extension solidifies our strong working relationship with the STM and demonstrates our commitment to supporting the ambitions for Montreal’s metro through our technology solutions,” said Alcino De Sousa, Vice President and Managing Director at Thales Urban Rail Signaling. “Our strong local presence in Quebec will ensure long-term support for the STM and the passengers they serve.”
