Supply Side: Alstom, Bentley, Cattron/JMA Railroad Supply Co.

Alstom and Plastic Omnium are partnering to develop hydrogen storage systems for the rail market. In addition, infrastructure engineering software firm Bentley Systems has announced the finalists of its annual infrastructure awards program, and Cattron has selected JMA Railroad Supply Co. as its manufacturing representative.

Alstom has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Plastic Omnium to design onboard storage systems for hydrogen-powered trains.

The companies have set up a dedicated team to manage technical and commercial development. This will enable the partners, “following development projects which have already started, to launch hydrogen storage solutions on the market for regional trains in France and Italy, starting in 2022,” Alstom and Plastic Omnium reported.

“The emergence of a strong hydrogen ecosystem is of critical importance for driving the development of hydrogen rail as a zero emissions alternative for regional rail,” Alstom Chief Commercial Officer Thierry Best said. “The planned combination of Plastic Omnium’s expertise in hydrogen storage solutions and our expertise in hydrogen trains is in this regard an important milestone to build an innovative and strong hydro rail value chain.”

“Our partnership with Alstom aims to develop high-performance hydrogen solutions capable of tackling the sustainability challenges facing railway transportation,” said Christian Kopp, CEO of the Plastic Omnium Clean Energy Systems division. “It is another step on the path toward carbon-free mobility and further confirmation of our Group’s expertise in hydrogen solutions and its potential for growth as it reaches out to a new customer base.” 

Bentley Systems Inc. will present 57 finalists with 2021 Going Digital Awards in Infrastructure on Dec. 2 as part of its Year in Infrastructure virtual event. The annual awards program honors the work of Bentley software users “advancing infrastructure design, construction and operations throughout the world,” according to the company.

Sixteen independent jury panels selected the finalists from nearly 300 nominations, which were submitted by more than 230 organizations from 45 countries. They encompass 19 categories, including Bridges; Buildings and Campuses; Digital Cities; Digital Construction; Geotechnical Engineering; Land Site and Development; Manufacturing; Mining and Offshore Engineering; Power Generation; Project Delivery Information Management; Rail and Transit; Reality Modeling; Road and Rail Asset Performance; Roads and Highways; Structural Engineering; Utilities and Communications; Utilities and Industrial Asset Performance; Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants; and Water, Wastewater and Stormwater Networks.

Among the finalists for the rail-related categories:

• Project Delivery Information Management: Mott MacDonald Systra JV with Balfour Beatty Vinci, HS2 Phase 1 Main Civil Construction Works (London, United Kingdom); and WSP, Port of Melbourne-Port Rail Transformation Project (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia).

• Rail and Transit: Network Rail + Jacobs, Transpennine Route Upgrade (Manchester/Leeds/York, United Kingdom); PT. MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), MRT Jakarta Phase II (Jakarta, DKI Jakarta, Indonesia); and Western Program Alliance, Level Crossing Removal Project (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia).

• Road and Rail Asset Performance: Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Oversize/Overweight Permitting System Improvement Project (Madison, Wis.); Collins Engineers, Inc., Stone Arch Bridge Rehabilitation (Minneapolis, Minn.); Province of Manitoba, Department of Infrastructure, MB MOOVES-Manitoba Infrastructure SUPERLOAD Upgrade (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada).

• Structural Engineering: Louis Berger SAS (A WSP Company), Detailed Design of Bridges for BG Rail Link between Rishikesh to Karnaprayag, Package-3 (Rishikesh and Karnaprayag, Uttarakhand, India).

JMA Railroad Supply Company, a manufacturer’s representative for more than 35 years, will represent Warren, Ohio-based Cattron’s wireless remote control products to the Class II and III railroads. Cattron has provided rail yard solutions since 1977, including a computer-based system that enables rail yard operators to control switchers using wireless control units.
