IRJ at Railway Interchange 2015: Pintsch Tiefenbach, Germany, had a prototype SIL4 software-based axle counter on display in Minneapolis.

The AZ2 will be able to monitor operations and report failures. It will also be designed for deployment on long block sections, the actual length being determined by the fibre-optic or radio system being used. It will be possible to link axle counters together to cover multiple block sections.

The company plans to conduct field testing later this year or early in 2016, and to obtain certification next year. The objective is to have the new axle counter ready for InnoTrans 2016.
