The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) names Johnny Dunning Jr. Chief Operating Officer (COO). Also, Matt Mahoney is promoted to Director of Business for Marmon’s Rail & Leasing Group.

OCTA

OCTA announced on June 12 that Johnny Dunning Jr. has been appointed COO, responsible for leading the Operations groups, including bus, commuter rail and OC Streetcar (now under construction), paratransit, microtransit, and mobility management. He will also oversee vehicle and facilities maintenance. Dunning, who joined OCTA in 2017 and has 25 years of experience in transit-system planning, had been serving as interim COO since January.

“I’m very happy that Johnny has accepted this role because he has clearly demonstrated his strong leadership, effectively guiding the Operations team to deliver on our mission of providing safe and reliable transit services for the people of Orange County,” said OCTA CEO Darrell E. Johnson.

Dunning will work directly with Johnson and Deputy CEO Jennifer L. Bergener to continue advancing Orange County’s public transit needs, including continued advancement of its zero-emission bus program, the agency said.

In his five years with OCTA, Dunning has served as Department Manager for Scheduling and Bus Operations Support, managing bus ridership information, resource planning for coach operators and OC Bus performance. Prior to OCTA, he served as the Manager of Service Planning with the North County Transit District (NCTD) and in planning positions at the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA).

Dunning holds advanced degrees in Civil Engineering and City Planning from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is said to have gained his appreciation for public transportation as a student relying on it.

Marmon

Matt Mahoney has been elevated to Director of Business Development within the Marmon Rail & Leasing Group. In this new role, he will be responsible for supporting the execution of strategic business initiatives. His work will focus on bringing the group’s offerings to a broad customer base and positioning the businesses to drive long-term partnerships with key customers, according to Marmon. Mahoney will also manage new car and component sales activities for UTLX (Union Tank Car Company) Manufacturing, part of Marmon Holdings, Inc.

Mahoney joined UTLX in 2017. He has more than 10 years of experience in the rail and transportation industry, which includes commercial roles with Greenbrier Rail Services and Redwood Logistics.

“Matt’s diverse experience, rail industry knowledge and strong relationships will be instrumental in this expanded role,” said Bill Merrill, Group President of Marmon Rail Shop Repair and Manufacturing.
