Written by Marybeth Luczak, Executive Editor

Norfolk Southern (NS) and consultancy WSP US have added new executives to their rosters.

Hunt Cary, a 28-year railroader, will become NS Vice President Operations Efficiency on Feb. 15. This is his second stint at the Class I railroad, where he began his career in 1993 as a transportation management trainee and advanced to Superintendent of the Knoxville, Tenn., rail terminal. In 2003, Cary joined CN as Superintendent of the Michigan zone and rose to Assistant Vice President Supply Chain Solutions. He moved to Union Pacific (UP) in 2018 as Assistant Vice President Service and Strategy, and most recently served there as Vice President Intermodal Operations.

“Hunt’s leadership abilities and broad experience in network operations and logistics will help Norfolk Southern accelerate our implementation of Precision Scheduled Railroading, continue to push improvement in our cost structure, and take our operational service performance to the next level,” said Chief Operating Officer Cindy Sanborn, who joined NS on Sept. 1, 2020.

At WSP USA, Peter Waldt is the new Director of Commercial Planning and Development, Advisory Services. He served previously as Senior Director of Commercial Planning and Development for Amtrak, where he led a team responsible for non-fare revenue generation and major station redevelopment transactions. Waldt’s projects included work on master developer agreements for the Moynihan Train Hall redevelopment in New York City, Chicago Union Station and Baltimore Penn Station.

“Peter brings a great deal of successful TOD [transit-oriented development] and asset monetization experience to WSP,” said Denise Turner Roth, Leader of Advisory Services. “His ability to assess the ‘financial architecture’ and potential land value capture strategies will provide significant value add to our clients.”
