McKinney Avenue Transit Authority in Dallas is set to celebrate the debut of a streetcar turntable Thursday, Dec. 15, complete with holiday lights coordinated to dazzle viewers when the turntable itself is in use.

APTA hails 3Q ridership gains

U.S. public transportation trips increased 2.0% in the third quarter compared with the third quarter of 2010, the American Public Transportation Association said Thursday—an increase of 52 million transit trips. The gains occurred in all public transport modes, with light rail transit leading the way, up 5.8%.

U.S. freight traffic up again in latest week

U.S. freight carload traffic rose 2.8% for the week ending Dec. 3, 2011, measured against the comparable week in 2010, the Association of American Railroads said Thursday. U.S. intermodal volume also did well, up 3.5% for the week compared with the same week one year ago.

Sao Paulo gets first Bombardier rehabbed EMU

Bombardier Transportation said Thursday that the company, part of a consortium, has unveiled the first of 26 six-car modernized metro trains for Companhia Metropolitana do Metro de São Paulo (CMSP). The train is ready to commence service on Line 1 of the São Paulo metro network, with all necessary tests having been completed, Bombardier said.

Lawton named CEO of Ansaldo STS USA

Ansaldo STS said Wednesday that as part of its ongoing re-organization, it had named Thomas P. Lawton president and CEO of Ansaldo STS USA, succeeding Dr. Alan E. Calegari.
