Norfolk Southern’s “digital transformation” initiatives now include rulebooks, bulletins, special instructions, and other “mission-critical documents” that the railroad’s more-than 8,000 T&E (Train and Engine) workers—conductors, engineers and other field operating personnel—are required to carry while on duty. NS has contracted with Cloud-hosted software provider Comply365 for rollout of a content management system and mobile application to “digitize operations, improve efficiency and enhance safety and compliance.”

Beloit, Wisc.-based Comply365, whose customers include many major airlines, has a rail division whose customers include CN, Amtrak, and Keolis Commuter Services, which operates the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s commuter rail network. The company describes itself as “an industry leader in providing operators a user-friendly mobile solution to access the mission-critical information they need at their fingertips, with the ability to quickly search and filter, bookmark, and annotate important documents.” Its enterprise SaaS (Software as a Service) and mobile solutions for content management and document distribution have been developed for highly regulated industries including aviation, rail and energy. Comply365 said it “played an instrumental role in the Federal Aviation Administration’s approval of replacing the traditional, paper-based pilot flight bags with EFBs (electronic flight bags).

“Our move from the paper world has already begun, and we’re excited to realize the benefits that a more digital workplace will provide, Norfolk Southern Director Operating Rules Corey Veal said. “As we researched a solution to complement our ongoing efforts, Comply365 stood out as a leader in digitally transforming the transportation industry. We look forward to providing our employees with an easy-to-use app that supports operational safety and compliance and creates a more efficient document management and delivery system.”

“We are happy to welcome the team at Norfolk Southern to our Comply365 rail division community,” Comply365 CEO Tom Samuel said. “The move Norfolk Southern and many others in the rail industry are making to their operational content management is transformational. We look forward to seeing the gains they will soon realize from electronic document delivery and automatic compliance tracking.”
