NJT: Bi-level EMUs, more dual-power locos on tap

NJ Transit has issued an RFP (request for proposals) for supply of 113 bi-level EMU (electric multiple-unit) passenger cars with a bid closing date of Feb. 15, 2018. NJ Transit also plans to invite bids early in 2018 for 17 dual-power locomotives.

The so-called “MultiLevel III” passenger cars will consist of 58 powered vehicles and 55 trailer coaches, and will replace 40-year-old Arrow III EMUs rebuilt by ABB Traction in 1993. NJ Transit currently operates a fleet of 429 Bombardier MultiLevel cars (62 cab cars, 367 trailer coaches) as well as several iterations of single-level cars (Comet II, Comet III, Comet IV).

The locomotives are needed to enable NJ Transit to retire much of its its fleet of older diesel locomotives, some of which date from 1968 and are becoming “increasingly unreliable,” the agency said. NJ Transit already operates 35 dual-power (diesel-electric/AC catenary) ALP-45DP locomotives supplied by Bombardier, as well as Bombardier ALP-46 electrics and Alstom PL42AC diesel-electrics.
