Loram Maintenance of Way, Inc., introduced the industry to the next entrant in its ballast maintenance product line with the launch of the Shoulder Ballast Cleaner 2400 at Railway Interchange's outdoor exhibit.

Loram says SBC 2400 has a cab-forward design, enhanced automation and can operate at speeds up to four miles per hour and in curvature up to 17 degrees. The SBC 2400’s 15 high capacity conveyors can process more than 2,400 cubic meters/hr.

Dennis Mathison, chief engineer at Loram, explained that the goal with the machine was to double shoulder cleaning production to allow twice the amount of track to be serviced.

The machine’s automation features include a sequential auto start-up of its digging wheels, conveyors and work mechanisms; automatic digging depth and scarifier control; bulk sensing conveyor flow measurement; obstacle detection and avoidance system; advanced crossing sequencing capability and an advanced Ethernet camera system.

“The SBC 2400 is the world’s most productive shoulder ballast cleaner,” Scott Diercks, director marketing and business development told Railway Track & Structures this past August. “This machine has the ability to process more material within a shorter track window, allowing the customer to lower unit cost and cover more of their system.”

The SBC 2400 can be seen at the Railway Interchange 2015 outdoor exhibit in both #304. Loram representatives can also be found at the indoor exhibit in REMSA booth #4421.
