East Coast ports opened a new era in shipping as the Ultra Large Container Vessel CMA CGM Theodore Roosevelt recently called the ports of Virginia, Savannah and Charleston for the first time.

At 14,414 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the ship in August became the largest containership to transit the Panama Canal and call East Coast ports with a stop in Norfolk, Va., August 28.

The 1,200-foot long Roosevelt and other ULCVs have capacity of more than 14,000 TEUs, and are the largest such vessels now in operation.

The ship is scheduled to inaugurate the raising of the Bayonne Bridge at the port of New York-New Jersey Sept. 7. The $1.6-billion project allows ships larger than 9,500 TEUs to call for the first time.

The Roosevelt is deployed on the new OCEAN Alliance’s weekly South Atlantic Express (SAX) service between Asia and U.S. East Coast ports of Norfolk, Savannah, and Charleston via the Panama Canal. The SAX service deploys 11 vessels ranging 11,000 to 14,000 TEUs.
