The Chicago Transit Authority’s first 7000 Series rapid transit cars have begun testing. The prototype married pair in the photo, consisting of car nos. 7005 and 7006, began EMI and brake testing on CTA’s North Side Main Line on Oct. 7.

Built by CRRC (China Railway Rolling Stock Corp.) subsidiary CSR Sifang America Joint Venture, the 7000 Series cars represent the largest single purchase of rapid transit cars in Chicago history. The CTA on March 9, 2016 awarded a $1.31 billion contract to CSR for 846 cars. The agency initially purchased a base $632 million order of 400 cars, with options to purchase the remainder in coming years.
