Caltrain to install new rail bridge

Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

Beginning just after midnight this Saturday, Caltrain will remove the railroad bridge that spans Jerrold Avenue in San Francisco and replace it with a modern single-span steel bridge. Caltrain expects to complete the move overnight, before train service begins Saturday morning.

The project also includes new steel structures and columns to support the bridge, new tracks through the area, new pavement on the street under the bridge and new sidewalks.

Preparatory work for the bridge replacement has been ongoing throughout this week, with crossing gates and lights on adjacent rail rights-of-way temporarily removed, support frames constructed, and the cranes positioned to guide the installation of the new bridge. Caltrain notes the existing bridge is more than 100 years old and has reached the end of its useful life.
