Appalachian Railcar Services makes buy

Eleanor, W. Va.-based Appalachian Railcar Services (ARS) on Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, said it has acquired BRC Rail Car Services of Lynchburg Va.

BRC will operate under a new division, Appalachian Tank Car, which was established for this acquisition, ARS said.

The addition doubles ARS’s workforce to more than 300 employees, while “[a]n additional 100 employees are expected to be hired over the next three years,” ARS said.

Founded in 2000, ARS now conducts 35 opertions in 14 states, providing maintenance/repair, storage, industrial switching, and other rail-related services to a variety of industries.

BRC, founded in 1972, has repair facilities in Hinton, W. Va., and Elk Mills, Md. These locations process 1,500 rail cars annually. BRC specializes in providing repair, cleaning, and interior/exterior coating services primarily for industrial tank cars, ARS said.
