Peaker Services, Inc. (PSI) recently completed acquisition of Energy Conversions, Inc. (ECI), Tacoma, Wash, a developer of natural gas conversion kits for high horsepower (HHP) diesel engine applications.

“Being an agile, end-user focused, innovative engine redesign developer has resulted in ECI being the first to market with a number of unique natural gas diesel conversion applications,” PSI said.

These applications include:

  • Dual-fuel natural gas EMD locomotive conversion with greater than 80% natural gas substitution using multi-point direct gas injection in conjunction with custom engine modifications;
  • Dual-fuel natural gas EMD generator conversion with greater 90% natural gas substitution using multi-point direct gas injection in conjunction with custom engine modifications.
  • Spark-ignited natural gas EMD locomotive and generator zero diesel fuel with multi-point direct gas injection in conjunction with custom engine modifications.
  • Systems are currently being developed towards EPA Tier 3 certification. In addition to the EMD application offerings, ECI has also developed and applied a simple to install single-point Economizer™ solution for dual-fuel conversions on a wide variety of four-cycle diesel engines worldwide.

PSI was founded in 1971 to repair and maintain EMD diesel generators or “Peakers” as they are known in the utility industry. The company progressively grew and diversified into complete locomotive remanufacturing, marine propulsion service and other industrial EMD applications. In 2000, the company began a related diversification effort into controls modernization for industrial engines, turbines and compressors in concert with their appointment as the Woodward Channel Partner for the Northeast and Midwest U.S. regions.

“PSI’s system integration of state-of-the-art Woodward controls provides unique and innovative industrial engine, turbine and compressor modernization solutions that increase efficiency, reliability and safety, while reducing emissions and operating costs as well as simplifying our customers’ operation and maintenance,” PSI said. “An area of particular specialty is natural, bio, synthetic and blended gas engine control, which provides significant synergy opportunities with ECI’s experience and expertise. The integration of PSI and ECI will blend the development of technologies to significantly improve legacy engine customers’ modernization needs well into the future.”
