California’s North County Transit District (NCTD) has awarded Siemens Mobility a 20-year service and parts contract for its fleet of up to nine Siemens Charger locomotives. They power COASTER regional/commuter rail between Oceanside and San Diego.

Valued at nearly $29 million, the contract covers base maintenance, with optional overhaul work on a task-order basis, for a total amount not to exceed $47 million. Siemens Mobility will also provide two full-time, on-site employees for technical expertise, materials management and engineering support. They will use locomotive remote monitoring technology to enable proactive, condition-based maintenance on the units, which are equipped with Cummins QSK-95 prime-movers.

The contract supports NCTD’s Zero Delay program for operations and maintenance, according to the agency.

In related news, COASTER marked 25 years of service earlier this year.
