California’s North County Transit District (NCTD) has ordered two additional Siemens Charger locomotives for its COASTER regional/commuter rail service.

They bring the order total to nine, completing NCTD’s efforts to convert its current fleet to more efficient, lower-emission diesel-electric units, which are powered by Cummins QSK95 4400hp Tier 4 engines. They will operate between Oceanside and San Diego.

In 2018, NCTD placed an initial order for five Siemens Charger locomotives; they are now in the testing and commissioning phase. In 2019, the NCTD Board of Directors approved the purchase of two additional units as well as two new trainsets, each consisting of a Siemens Charger locomotive and five Bombardier bi-level cars (four trailer cars and cab car). Once in service, the trainsets will enable NCTD to nearly double service frequency in San Diego County.

NCTD purchased the Siemens Chargers as part of a multi-state procurement with the California and Illinois Departments of Transportation awarded in 2014.

“In addition to increasing service frequencies, these new locomotives will provide a smoother and more reliable passenger experience, significantly reduce diesel emissions and improve air quality, and reduce noise pollution for residents and riders,” NCTD Board Chair and Encinitas Councilmember Tony Kranz said.

“These two additional locomotives represent an important milestone for us, bringing the total number of locomotives Siemens Mobility has sold in North America to 300,” added Michael Cahill, President of Siemens Mobility Rolling Stock in North America.

NCTD tapped Siemens for a Charger service contract in September.
