MTA New York City Transit (NYCT) serves close to 5.6 million subway customers and 2.3 million bus customers on an average weekday.  Its 50,000 employees provide mass transit and paratransit service throughout the five boroughs of New York City, including operating almost 7,000 subway cars at 472 stations. 

The NYC Transit Department of Subways employs 30,000 individuals who work together 24/7, 365 days a year, to move millions of customers safely to their destinations. These employees operate trains, maintain railcars, assist customers in stations, make critical right-of-way or electronic repairs, maintain approximately 833 miles of track, and provide administrative support to deliver timely and reliable customer services. 

NYC Transit is seeking an experienced, dynamic leader to be responsible for managing a team of eight professional engineers who carry out complex track and switch engineering surveys and design track and special work for all track and switch reconstruction and maintenance in the NYCT System during night time and weekends. The Director of Subways Field Support will be responsible for planning, coordinating and performing track and switch engineering surveys; evaluation of existing field conditions; design of optimum replacement type and alignment of tracks and switches; preparation of detailed design drawings; and, performing on-site technical support during track and special work installations. Additional responsibilities include providing engineering assistance to the Track Maintenance and Track Construction Divisions to ensure that NYCT and industry standards and guidelines are met. The selected candidate must be prepared to react/respond to emergencies and other critical occurrences as required 24hrs/7days a week. 

Education and Experience Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a closely related field of study and five (5) years of full-time related experience, of which three (3) years must have been in a managerial/supervisory/administrative capacity; Or a satisfactory combination of education and experience. 

Note: All applicants must possess a valid New York State Professional Engineer license. 

Desired Skills:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering inspection techniques, track and switch construction design and engineering standards, track maintenance and construction methods, materials technology and track related manufacturing.
  • Extensive track related experience is highly desirable
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and CADD, including Bentley Rail Track software.
