The mission of Maintenance of Way, Engineering is to provide quality professional engineering and technical support to the operating subdivisions of Track, Infrastructure, Electrical (Signal and Power), Electronics Maintenance and Elevator & Escalators. Support is provided for day to day maintenance activities as well as the planning and designing of major reconstruction through both in-house and Capital Projects. Additionally, the Engineering subdivision is involved in developing and administering numerous operating contracts, performing inspections of operating construction projects and third-party construction work, and planning and administering space allocation and oversight of the relocation of NYCT personnel.

Maintenance of Way, Engineering is currently seeking an experienced, dynamic leader to assume the role of Director, Ultrasonic Rail Flaw Inspection. The selected candidate will be responsible for managing NYCT’s internal rail flaw track inspection operations, including UT Inspections and other specialized inspections of track elements. Additional responsibilities include: directing rail flaw inspection operations, including audits of NDT systems operations onboard the Track Geometry Cars, and field verifications of rail defects; performing project management functions for both the DAP-NDT Rail Services and Sperry Rail Services Contracts; ensuring the successful performance of the annual internal rail flaw inspection of mainline tracks; performing QA/QC management of UT operations; managing, reviewing and checking daily ultrasonic test inspection data, validating the successful completion of each test run as scheduled, and assuring the reporting of critical defects promptly and accurately. The director will also review contractors’ personnel qualifications and certifications, as well as UT personnel’s attendance reports and invoices.

Education and Experience Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in engineering, materials study, metallurgy or a closely related field of study, and 8 years of full-time related experience, of which 5 years must have been in a managerial capacity; OR

A satisfactory combination of education and experience.

Desired Skills:

  • ASNT NDT Level II qualified and certified in accordance with ASNT SNT-TC 1A standards (latest edition).
  • Hands-on experience in mechanical equipment inspections and UT inspections.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
