Metro Ports Adds Tier 4 Power to Long Beach

Terminal operator and stevedoring company Metro Ports has acquired a second Tier 4 locomotive for its Pier G operations at the Port of Long Beach in California.

With the $1.2 million investment, Metro Ports said it expects to reduce air emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (PM) and reactive organic gas (ROG) by more than 4.5 tons over the next 15 years. 

“The new locomotive’s addition is a project four years in the making, involving Knoxville Locomotive Works and the South Coast Air Quality Management District,” the company reported. The District was able to coordinate the procurement of grant funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, since the project will achieve significant reductions in emissions. Metro Port’s first Tier 4 unit was from National Railway Equipment Company.

“Through this acquisition, Metro continues to enhance its leadership position in the demonstration and deployment of clean technology equipment,” Port of Long Beach Executive Director Mario Cordero said. “Such efforts will help the Port, in partnership with operators like Metro, meet and exceed its CAAP [Clean Air Action Plan] goals.”
