CSX has broken ground on a $25 million-plus container storage facility in Chicago to support its 59th Street and Bedford Park intermodal terminals.

The 63rd Street intermodal container storage yard is expected to start operating this December, according to CSX.

While construction preparations—including environmental remediation and site clearing—began in April, the official groundbreaking took place June 21.

“We are investing in Chicago’s Englewood community to transform a former industrial site into a modern container storage facility,” CSX Senior Terminal Manager Tee Stribling said. “CSX has been a part of this neighborhood for more than 20 years and we are excited to bring more jobs and business opportunities to local residents. We appreciate the vision, dedication and commitment of Alderman [Stephanie] Coleman in helping to make this possible.”

“One of my highest priorities as Alderman has been championing economic investment in Englewood,” said Coleman, who serves Chicago’s 16th Ward, which also includes Chicago Lawn, Gage Park, New City and West Englewood. “We are grateful for the partnership with CSX and its team. I believe this development will have a positive effect and will encourage other private sector entities to consider Englewood for business investment.”
