Union Pacific sets $8.1M for Minnesota, Montana

Union Pacific  announced it will invest a total $8.1 million in 2018 in its infrastructure in Minnesota and Montana.

The planned investment by Omaha-based UP is intended to support several initiatives in Minnesota, including $3.4 million to maintain track and $1.8 million for bridges.

Key projects include a $942,700 investment in a bridge in Lilydale and $852,000 in Minneapolis-based Midway Yard.

The railroad also plans to spend $815,900 on various railroad crossings between Fairmont and an area north of Mason City.

The $6 million investment in Minnesota is part of the Class 1’s ongoing investment strategy, officials said. In the past five years, UP has invested more than $94.9 million to enhance the state’s transportation infrastructure.

The railroad’s planned Montana investment will fund various initiatives, including $1.4 million in the rail line between Butte-Silver Bow and near Lima to replace 10,000 crossties along the Montana Subdivision.

The carrier also plans a $748,600 investment in the rail line between Moose Creek and Walkerville to replace curved rail along the Montana Subdivision. A $200,000 investment in the line in Butte-Silver Bow is also expected to upgrade crossing warnings.

In the past five years, UP has invested more than $8.2 million to bolster the Montana network.

The spending in Minnesota and Montana Montana are part of the railroad’s previously announced $3.3 billion capital program.
