The Wi-Tronix system will help BRC make “improvements to our use of fuel, our environmental footprint and the overall efficiency of our locomotive assets,” President Mike Grace said.

The Wi-Tronix system will help BRC make “improvements to our use of fuel, our environmental footprint and the overall efficiency of our locomotive assets,” President Mike Grace said.

The Belt Railway Company of Chicago (BRC) will equip its switching locomotive fleet with fuel consumption and idle reduction monitoring, incident investigation and mechanical health status, and high-coupling force alert technologies from Wi-Tronix.

These features are part of the Bollingbrook, Ill.-based supplier’s Violet Edge IoT System, and they “enable fast, efficient response to emergency situations or incident investigations.”

The system will help BRC, an intermediate switching terminal railroad, make “improvements to our use of fuel, our environmental footprint and the overall efficiency of our locomotive assets,” President Mike Grace said. “At the BRC, we are excited to have a connected solution that will provide actionable information and insights on how our rail networks are performing in real time.”

BRC has more than 780 acres of facilities, 300-plus miles of yard track, and a 28-mile multiple-track main line. Its Clearing Yard classifies and dispatches more than 3,000 railcars daily.

“Being a contained switching operation, The Belt Railway of Chicago has some unique operational requirements, and the flexibility of the Wi-Tronix solution enables us to deliver on business value,” Wi-Tronix CEO and CTO Larry Jordan said.
